5 cl vodka
10 cl ginger beer
1 cl fresh lime juice
Ice cubes
Slice of cucumber or lime wedge for decoration
The Moscow Mule thrives on its simplicity – and its freshness.
First, pour the vodka into an ice-cold copper mug, followed by a splash of lime juice. Add a few large ice cubes – the bigger the better, as they melt more slowly and don’t water down the drink.
Now the ginger beer comes into play: it provides the characteristic tingle and the slightly spicy ginger note, which combines perfectly with the citrus freshness.
Stir gently, garnish with a lime wedge or a slice of cucumber – and it’s ready:
A drink that looks so simple, but tastes really great.
When you take your first sip, you feel the tingle of ginger, the freshness of lime and the coolness of the cup – a combination that has been inspiring for over 80 years.
When you think of vodka, you automatically think of Russia – and that’s exactly what two men cleverly used for their marketing idea in the 1940s.
John G. Martin, who worked for a spirits company, had a whole warehouse full of vodka at the time, which nobody in the USA wanted to drink – “too foreign, too strong, too clear”.
A friend of his, Jack Morgan, owned a pub in Los Angeles and had tons of ginger beer left over that nobody wanted to order.
And then there was an acquaintance who was desperately trying to sell her handmade copper mugs.
What happened next is cocktail history: three surplus products, an ingenious idea – and the Moscow Mule was born.
This or something similar may have happened in Hollywood in the 1940s. Whether it is the truth or rather a myth is no longer so easy to say.
However, the drink quickly became a symbol of a new, modern bar culture. The copper mug design became part of the legend because it kept the drink ice-cold and immediately caught the eye.
The Moscow Mule was soon known throughout America – and made vodka really popular for the first time.
Clear vodka, precisely produced – for pure enjoyment and strong drinks.
